ZANESVILLE, OH – Who doesn’t love a handmade teddy bear? For years, the residents and staff at Primrose Retirement Community of Zanesville have been making teddy bears and giving them away to people and organizations both locally and around the world.
Tammy Grayson, Life Enrichment Coordinator at Primrose, came up with the idea several years ago, and to date, Primrose has donated over 400 bears. “We found patterns for three different sizes of bears. All of the fabric was donated by Carol Bryan at Bryan’s Interiors here in Zanesville,” Grayson said. “We also had stuffing donated, and we have about 10 residents who volunteer their time to make teddy bears two or three times every month.” She added
Over the years, bears have been given to the Bethesda Hospital Pediatric Unit, Transitions Women’s Shelter, Eastside Community Ministry, and to Operation Spirit, which sends the bears to soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. Most recently, 100 bears were given to the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department and to the Zanesville Police Department. “They love to carry them in their cruisers and give them to children when they have a chance,” Grayson added.
Primrose plans to continue working on this project indefinitely. There is no goal in mind as to how many bears they will make. “As long as we have materials and time, we will continue making these bears. Our residents very much enjoy the fellowship, and working together to make a difference in the community,” Grayson said.
